Headliner Repair and Replacement
Sagging, torn, or stained headliners replaced with factory-matched material and a clean, tight finish. Visors, pillar trim, and sunroof surrounds recovered to match.
The fabric is not what fails.
Underneath it sits a thin layer of foam bonded to a backing board. After enough Michigan summers that foam turns to dust.
The fabric then has nothing holding it up and drops away from the roof, usually starting above the rear window. Because the foam is the failure, pins and glue do not fix it. The board has to come out, get stripped back to bare, and be recovered with new foam-backed material.
Done that way it stays up. Done with adhesive alone it will be hanging again by next summer.
How a headliner gets redone.
-
01
Out of the vehicle
The headliner and the trim holding it in come out of the vehicle.
-
02
Stripped and prepared
The old fabric and crumbled foam come off, and the board is cleaned and prepared so the new material has a sound surface.
-
03
New material bonded
Factory-matched material is bonded to the board and trimmed at the edges.
-
04
Back in
The finished headliner is reinstalled in the vehicle and the trim refitted.

In and out in a day, most of the time.
Headliner work is one of the quicker jobs in the shop, and one of the most noticeable.
Because we keep headliner material on the shelf rather than ordering it for each job, most vehicles are done the same day they come in.
Cars, trucks, and vans all welcome. If the vehicle has a sunroof or a moonroof, say so when you call, because it changes how the board comes out.
Doing it yourself? Headliner material can be bought over the counter in the showroom. Door panels coming apart too? See Door Panels and Interior Trim.
Headliner questions, answered.
What people ask most about a sagging headliner.
Why is my headliner sagging?
The thin layer of foam between the fabric and the backing board breaks down with heat and age and turns to dust. With nothing holding it, the fabric drops away from the roof, usually starting above the rear window.
Can a sagging headliner be glued or pinned back up?
Not for long. Because the foam is what failed, adhesive and pins do not hold. The board has to come out, be stripped to bare, and be recovered with new foam-backed material.
How long does headliner replacement take?
Most vehicles are done the same day they come in, because headliner material is kept on the shelf.
Does a sunroof change the job?
Yes. A sunroof or moonroof changes how the board comes out, so mention it when you call.
Can the visors and pillar trim match the new headliner?
Yes. Sun visors, pillar trim, grab handles, and sunroof surrounds are recovered to match.
