Convertible Top Repair and Replacement

Replacing and servicing convertible tops since 1980, on every year, make, and model. Full top replacement, rear window repair, header and seal work, and pump or motor diagnosis, all in the shop on Mound Road.

Forty-plus years of soft tops

Nobody in the Midwest replaces more convertible tops.

Since 1980 this shop has fitted tops on current-model convertibles, forty-year-old drivers, and concours vintage frames. The same trimmers do all three.

Volume matters here in a way it does not in most trim work. A top that has been fitted a hundred times before goes on tight the first time.

Michigan weather is usually what brings a top in. Rear windows craze and yellow, seams let go at the bow, and fabric stiffens and splits after enough freeze cycles. Often the top itself is sound and only the window needs replacing, which is a considerably smaller job. We will tell you which one you are looking at before any work starts.

Is it the top, or just the window?

One is a much smaller job than the other. Call the shop with your year, make, and model and we will tell you straight.

Frames, seals, and mechanisms

Frame, bow, and pad repair before a new top goes on, so the new top sits the way it should. Weatherstrip and header work is the usual source of a leak that gets blamed on the fabric.

Fixed Tops

Vinyl roofs and landau tops.

Not every soft top folds. Full vinyl roofs and padded landau tops were common on seventies and eighties American cars, and they still show up on later conversions.

When a vinyl roof cracks, shrinks, or starts lifting at the edges, the old covering comes off and the roof gets a new one. Padded landau tops get new padding under the vinyl, so the shape reads the way it did when the car was new.

These tops do not fold, so there is no frame or mechanism to deal with. Send a photo of the roof with your year, make, and model and we will tell you what the job involves.

Custom Covers

Car covers and tonneau covers.

Covers sewn in the shop to fit the vehicle they protect.

A fitted car cover stays put in the wind and sits close to the body instead of flapping against the paint the way a loose, universal cover can. Covers are patterned to the car and sewn on the same machines as our tops and top boots.

Tonneau covers are made for convertibles, to close off the cockpit or cover a lowered top, and for pickup truck beds. They can be made to match a new top.

Makes

What we fit.

Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Miata, Wrangler, Beetle, Sebring, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, and most of what else drops its roof.

Vintage frames from the fifties and sixties are routine work here, not an exception. The machine shop handles frame metalwork in house, so a seized or bent frame does not send the job out of the building. For the rest of a classic interior, see Vintage Restoration.

Most convertible top estimates go out the same or next business day.

Common Questions

Convertible top questions, answered.

What convertible owners ask most before booking.

Does my convertible need a new top, or just a new rear window?

Often only the window. Rear windows craze and yellow long before the fabric fails, and replacing the window is a considerably smaller job. We will tell you which one you are looking at before any work starts.

Why does my convertible top leak?

Often it is not the fabric. Worn weatherstrip and header alignment are the usual source of a leak that gets blamed on the top.

What convertibles do you work on?

Every year, make, and model, including Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Miata, Wrangler, Beetle, Sebring, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche, plus vintage frames from the fifties and sixties.

What top materials are available?

Fabric, vinyl, and Stayfast canvas, fitted to the original frame. Top boots and tonneau covers can be made to match.

Do you replace vinyl roofs and landau tops?

Yes. Full vinyl roofs and padded landau tops are both recovered, with new padding under the vinyl on landau tops.

How quickly can I get an estimate?

Most convertible top estimates go out the same or next business day.
